I tried taking pictures with a variety of lighting combinations. I thought that my camera did a good job of collecting the picture information even though I was shooting in manual mode and bracketing. Here are my contact sheets showing a lot of things I tried. I choose a picture of Parker in the snow with shadows from the trees.
I also picked a picture shot indoors with snow outside through the window.

I wish you had tried printing one of those blue tarp images large. Nice experimentation with natural light but maybe you could have tried working more with patterns and artificial light?
